Empower Your Career - Tips & Tools for Making 'Iconic' Power Apps

On Saturday, 4th April 2020, I presented my first speaking session.

The concept came from MVP Victor Dantes. Victor had some friends who have had there career affected by the COVID-19 crisis. The purpose of the conference was to introduce this audience to Power Apps and help them get started or improve there existing knowledge.

This opportunity was a perfect for me as I could talk about something I know very well and as it was a global event I could present at a suitable time where I wouldn't get interrupted by my three-year-old. I heard about the call for speakers on Thursday 26th March, submitted two sessions and my one on icons within Power Apps was accepted, so I had just over a week to pull together some slides and transform a 20-minute demo into a 50-minute presentation.

Due to other commitments, I didn't get started on this until the following week - Thursday 02nd April. However, I had reached out to a few experts in the graphic design industry to help me create some content around the use of icons in apps in general (Thanks, Pete Marshall and Martin McGlade). I also had a rough storyboard of what I would like to cover.

Having the slide deck provided was a huge help, and I just got started finishing by brainstorming ideas onto the slides. Then I spent some time re-ordering them into a sensible order. I got a few hours of sleep between 9 pm and midnight on Saturday evening before making a few adjustments and doing a test run which miraculously ended at precisely 50 minutes.

I presented my session at 4 am in the UK, which was 11 am in Australia, and I think it went rather well for a first-timer and considering the quick turnaround.

Being part of this conference meant a lot to me as I'm passionate about helping people to progress, especially those who are facing difficulties.
